Dear Dr. Sears:
I am very glad indeed to send you two of our electron-diffraction films (measurements for which are given in Tables III, IV, V, VI, & VIII of our paper. If there are too dense or are otherwise unsuitable to your new microphotometer let me know. I should be very happy if we could develop a good objective method of interpretation.
With best wishes for the new year, I am
Very truly yours,

- Letter from LP to Warren Weaver, Director of the Natural Sciences, The Rockefeller Foundation. [LP Science Box 14.037, Folder 5]
January 25, 1935
Dr. Warren Weaver,
The Rockefeller Foundation,
49 West 49th Street,
New York City.
Dear Dr. Weaver:
I need hardly say that I am very happy to learn from you that the Rockefeller Foundation will provide support (in addition to that of the California Institute) for my researches for three more years. I have delayed answering your letter for two weeks in order that I might he able to tell you that we had already begun the experimental investigation of hemoglobin; we have met with some difficulties in obtaining pure substances, however, and so the investigation is not yet under way. As I have read about the problems of biochemistry I have become more and more enthusiastic about the possibilities of the application of our methods.
Dr. Noyes has told me that he heard that you would come West this spring; if so, I hope to see you here, and if not, I shall probably call on you in New York at about the time of the Washington meetings, which I hope to attend.
Very sincerely yours,
LP:M

January 29, 1935
Dear Dr. Sears:
I was of course very much interested to see your results on CCl4. The maxima as we measured them on 281 are [table of maxima data] Average 1.73 Å
You see that your D values lie about 1/4 of the way back to the preceding maximum - which is in agreement with interpreting them as giving maximum slopes.
I have delayed answering to make some slope calculations. Identifying your D values with maxima on an approximate theoretical slope curve, we obtain the above values for C-Cl distances, which average around the probably correct value 1.76 Å, though coming out a little low.
I am enclosing films for Br2 and CH2=CHCl. The former is interesting because we know the Br-Br distance from band spectra, the latter because of the variety in spacing of the rings. I hope you will be able to run these through. We shall continue to calculate theoretical slope curves for them.
I shall be in Cambridge from April 4th to 17th, and shall talk with you then about the apparatus. I am confident that it will put gas-molecule work on a sound basis.
With best regards,
Linus Pauling
