October 10, 1933.
Prof. Arthur B. Lamb,
Chemical Laboratory,
Harvard University,
Cambridge, Mass.
Dear Professor Lamb:
I recommend that the paper by Rice and Johnston be published. Perhaps the authors would be interested in the appended remarks.
Very truly yours,
Linus Pauling
Remarks
1. On page 2, the statement in the first sentence of the third paragraph seems incorrect to me. I find on calculation that C2H5 is stable relative to C2H4 + H, C3H7 is stable relative to C2H4 + CH3, etc.
2. Also, on page 2, first sentence, it is said that the time of removal of a mirror is evidently inversely proportional to the concentration of free radicals. May there not be some dependence on the temperature?
3. On page 9, Table V, the data for tm for ethane are not given.

- Handwritten note from F.J. Allen, Purdue University Department of Chemistry, to LP, RE: Notes that the article by Kaye and Yost aroused his curiousity and questions why they were so stingy with the xenon, asking if they lost some by accident. Says that he would be glad to have any xenon that is left. Tells LP that he read with pleasure about LP's trip to Corvallis in "Science." Suggests that LP visit Purdue sometime. Tells LP that they are going to adopt a daughter around Christmas time. Notes that they O.S.A.C. is getting a tough break lately and that he feels guilty for urging Gilbert to stay there.
