Dearest girl:
I was glad to hear from you — I look for mail every hour or so, and none came yesterday because you think its not good for one to have too much. I've just come in from going to a movie with Lawrence, called "It pays to advertise." It was pretty good. Last night too I went to a movie, in Oakland, and alone. It was called "They're hardly gentlemen" or something like that. I came home at about 10
30
, and worked on my lecture until 12, and slept till 9:45, and then bathed + shaved + worked on my lecture till 11, and then gave it. Everyone seems very much interested in my work. After lunch I talked with Tolman a while and then he and I inspected Lawrence's new apparatus for getting high speed positive ions and then I went to Birge's

seminar from 3

. You see I keep pretty busy, even though I'm not working very hard. It has been raining a little here.
I'm sorry Jeff's tummy is upset. The Brode baby was born this morning at 9 AM. He weighs 8# 3 oz. I'm sorry Badger's mother died.
I've seen everyone here now — Rollefson + Professor Hall + Stewart + Porter, etc.
I'm glad to hear that you like little Jeff. I like him too, and Linus too, and you too. I'll come and see you next week, starting tonight (in a week). How will that be? I love you, darling. I'll go out now to mail this, so you'll get it tomorrow.

Dearest darling girl:
How are you? I love you very much. I have just got up. Every night I have a hard time going to bed — last night I read till 12, and worked till 1
20
. Usually I get up at 10. Last night I was nearly asleep when I wakened suddenly at about 1

or 2 and thought I heard you call my name. I suppose I heard some little noise. I'm surprised at how superstitious I might be. I have some english [sic] toffee which I like to eat. The meals here are at the club are good — 50 + 75 cents. Before reading I

Yesterday morning I went to talk with Dore, a man in the agr. department or something trying to use x-ray methods on the sugars, and talked to him for a long time. In the afternoon I went for a little walk on the hills above the stadium, and then went to Telegraph Avenue and bought a pair of scissors and some shaving cream. I like my leather box that you and Liny gave me very much. Bray asked me to a dinner for

Now I am going with Richy out to have dinner at Aunt Beth's. We'll come back at 6, I think — I don't want to stay all evening. I'm looking forward with keen anticipation to seeing you next week, darling little wife.

Dearest Ava Helen:
You are a sweet girl to have sent me a special delivery letter yesterday, and such an interesting one, too. Yesterday at 6 PM on returning from Aunt Beth's I met Mrs + Mr Bacher + Mr + Mrs Wolfe and walked around with them for a while and told them that I got up late because I hated to go to bed alone. The Wolfe's asked me to come to a party tomorrow night, to play Murder. I'm afraid you won't get a letter today, because the one I wrote yesterday morning stayed in my pocket till evening. Rich and I went to see Aunt Beth. She had a nice dinner for us, and said she
[page 2:]
told anyone who got snooty with her that her nephew + niece lived in a room with four bathrooms. Their house is fixed up a little now, but not much, and they don't seem to be thinking of getting a better one. She took me and the boys for a ride to the swimming pool and the Ford plant, and while the boys were playing she talked about Rich. She said not to lend him any money — that Aunt Lucile should take care of him. Aunt Lucile hadn't said I was going to lend him money or anything — she seems to be afraid of Aunt Beth. She said Rich needed careful watching, what with his paternity and his poor upbringing by his mother. She said he likes
[page 3:]
wine too well already — poor Rich. He seems happy, though.
Last night I got a book on Spiritualism from the library + read it. It was quite amusing, but obviously fraudulent. Then this morning I prepared and gave my lecture. Everyone was interested, although the most interesting things are still to come. Tonight I'm going to talk at the Physics research conference. White and Newmann [?] dropped in today from Pasadena.
Now I have a man in Physics to see and some letters
[page 4:]
to write, about the Symposia.
I love you, darling. Donny and Richard were disappointed not to see Linus. Love to him and Jeff and you, you darling.

Dearest girl:
This afternoon after lunch I went with Lawrence to see Mrs. Brode. She looks just the same. After a while I left Lawrence with her and went to see Mrs. Latimer — as her first visitor. She looked really beautiful, and I told her so. I think she's glad she has her little baby girl. Then I came away with Lawrence and then had some tulips sent to Mrs. Latimer. Then I went to the Lab, and looked around at some freshman labs a while, and said hello to König, and told Latimer that I'd visited his wife and thought she was beautiful. He said she worried sometimes about some of her features — pug nose especially. Then I went to a tea in the physics building given by the physics

sorority for the physics staff. I talked with a girl (tall, blue eyes) named Miss Dempsey, who tries to study mathematics — although she didn't seem to know much. She seemed to be on her best behaviour — I didn't mention that I was married! After about twenty minutes I went to Latimer's office and had some wine to prepare us for the chem. seminar. Then Latimer presented a paper. After it was over Lewis made some remarks, and I gave a rebuttal, and it developed into a rough and tumble, knock down and dragout affair. I think I came out a little ahead. It was very exciting.
I love you, darling. I hope the two weeks pass by quickly. Love to Linus and Jeff.

Dearest sweetheart;
Your letter was very nice and I'm sorry your imagination has limitations. You miss so much! I have a good joke on the boys! Today I stopped for mail as I brought Linus from school and there was a big box to you from Sterling Hendricks, but it had been opened. James came and blushed furiously and said he and Sydney had opened it since they had thought it was something from Bozorth-they confused the two. I said "Oh, that's all right. We'll just leave it for Linus." But poor James said, "Oh, but its for Peter!" I said, "Oh." You see I wasn't going to look at it since I thought, too, that it was plates, films, etc. But then I did open it and it is the most cunning knitted little blanket. You should see it. Poor little Jeff will roast if he wears out all of his blankets.
Elizabeth Swift bought another book today and talked awhile "Three Titans" by Emil Lundwig- you know we read of it. Tonight I saw the name Rosemary Schabarum in the paper and looked then in the telephone book and saw Bruno R. Schabarum in South Pasadena. Isn't it strange that she never looked me up? I'm going to call her in the morning.
Linus says his throat is sore. How are you? I have been amused by Mamma telling me stories about what happened when George was twelve and I was just a baby although George is seventeen years older than I. Poor Mamma! I didn't point out the inconsistency of this. She is quilting a quilt. I made the pattern - a fan. She can't understand how I can get it accurate. [drawing of fan pattern] You see that isn't accurate. She says all quilts used to have a fan design. I'm going to bed now. I don't know why I'm weary when I don't do anything to speak of. It is eight o'clock. I'm afraid you won't get this tomorrow. Much love,
Ava Helen
P.S. We'll have to send the wedding present now.

Dearest darling lovely sweetheart: I adore you and was tickled to get a letter from you yesterday. You won't catch me giving any of the cookies away. They are very good. ... There's only one week more now!
Yesterday I went to the library and got a book "Fanny Hill" by John Cleland. It is really a masterpiece in its way. I'll bring it home for you to read. You wouldn't believe that such events could be so delicately described. It is kept in the same case as Casanova, etc. Then Rich took dinner with me at the Club. Whyburn from UCLA, here for a couple of days for a meeting, ate with us. Then we went to the Fox Dalsland movie & saw a movie described in Time, about the rich man's secretary who married a scoundrel, and after much suffering ran off with the reformed rich man. It was quite good, especially the dialogue. We got back at 11, and I read my book till 1, and went to bed. I awakened at 10
50
, with barely time to get to my unprepared lecture! That is what Fanny did to me. However, the lecture seemed to be as good as those I prepare; so I've probably been wasting my time. Today I got a letter from Maury, including a note he's written for the Phys Rev ^(about Zachariasen), and one for the JACS criticising [sic] Clark. Lamb will have to stop protecting Clark pretty soon.
Sunday evening I'm going to a waffle supper with the Jenkins. Tonight I go to the Baxter's.
I love you, sweetheart, and Linus and Jeff.

Dearest Sweetheart:
I love you, darling. Yours [sic] + Linus' letter came this morning. I'm glad Jeff is such a nice boy. Are you glad that I'll be with you a week from today? I love you, sweetest girl, more than anything in the whole world.
Yesterday after writing you I went to see Pabst, the mineralogist here. He has given up attempting to do any x-ray work. He gave me some crystals, and promised me more. I talked to him till 430, and then to Eastman till 6, and then walked down to the Baxters' apartment. Baxter, now working for the Shell Development Co., has gained 40 pounds since getting married! He's as fat as a pig. His wife is as thin as ever. She is still working for a PhD, and attends my lectures. Then I came home, read, and went to bed. Mrs Baxter's dinner was very good. Their apartment is attractive.
This morning, after reading your letter, I saw Bray, who bored me for an hour and
[page 2:]
a half with an account of oxygen reactions. At lunch I talked with Prof Noyes of the Slavic Language Dep't. He told a story about Prof. Rising and football player who just had to pass his chemistry. His examination (+ answers) was:
1. What color is blue vitriol? Ans. Pink.
2. " " " red oxide of lead? And. I don't know.
The second answer was right, so he got 50 on the exam. + passed.
I've just seen Leonard Loeb, who told me all about the books he's writing, etc.
This afternoon I'm taking the Stuarts to the Partheneia.
Love to you and Linus + Jeff.

Dearest little wife:
I love you with all my heart, darling, and every day I count up the days until I shall see you again. Won't it be fun to be together all the time? Don't you think we'd better arrange to go everywhere together after this? I can't get along without you, sweetheart - it really is true. Since coming back from my week-end trip with you I've tried to work, but it is impossible for me to concentrate on anything but you. When I start thinking about the magnetic moments of molecules, that suggest the vector model, and that the structure of complex ions, and that your structure (not that you are at all angular or geo- [new line] metrical!) And here I am back to you! And if I start on quantum mechanics, it is necessary to work with eigenfunctions, which in English are called proper
[Page 2]
functions, and since my proper function is to make love to you, there I am again! Well, it won't be many more ages till next Saturday, and then I'll exercise my proper function so much you'll want me to go away again.
Yesterday I read a book by Henri Barbusse, called "L'Enfer". It is about a man who for a month watches through a hole in the wall everything that takes place in a room next to his, and attempts to under- [new line] stand life and deduce its significance and purpose from what he sees. Perhaps you would like to read it - it is really original in conception.
Yesterday afternoon the Stuarts and I went to the Partheneia [sic]. It was not much good - rather boring after the first ten minutes. Lots of the girls were too fat and clumsy, some to [sic] thin.
[Page 3]
The dancing was mainly classical, with only a little tap dancing. As was to be expected, the allegory was a very feeble excuse. Despite all this, Stuart (from cold Königsberg, where girls never get their overcoats off) said that it was all right, except that it didn't last long enough.
Last night Laurence and I went to the movie, see "June Moon". We had a good time. Then I read part of a book on Al Capone which he lent me. At noon Aunt Beth and her family & Rich are coming, and I'm taking them to a show & to dinner (first). Then I'm going to try to visit the Hall's before

You were very wicked not to send me a special delivery letter, and keep me waiting all day to hear from you! But a nice letter came this morn- [new line] ing, so I don't mind very much. I'm surely anxious to be with you again. Yesterday at noon Aunt Beth & Family & Rich came, and I took them to dinner at the House of Crane, in Oakland (dinner $1) and then to the Orpheum [sic]. The movie was "Lonesome Wives", from a stage farce, and full of the worst doubles entendres. I blushed for Rich. Donny & buddy laughed up- [new line] roariously, but they can't have understood much. Then they went home, and at 5 I called on the Halls. Mrs Hall is not very well. Hall taught high school in Long Beach in the 90's, when the city boast of 1500 inhabitants. Mrs Hall, apropos of my saying how much I missed you, said that life was made much
[Page 2]
richer by a congenial companion; and they may call on us sometime in Pasadena. Then at 6
30
I went to the Jenkin's. Aunt Beth saw my note-book, reading "Mrs Jenkin's, 6
30
", so I said "There's a Mr Jenkins too", and she said "But perhaps he won't be at home." I mixed the waffle batter, since no one had arrived; then the Brodes came, and Mr & Mrs Pinell. After supper the White's came. Mrs. White is a cute little thing, whose baby much be due in a week or so. I've decided I have a particular fondness for pregnant women. At 10
30
Brode's & Whites went home (we had been playing murder), and the Jenkins started to drive the Pineels & me home, as it was raining. We went to see the Pinell's house, which they designed and built themselves. It is on Buena Vista Rd, on the hill, with
[Page 3]
very big windows and a fire place with an opening 5 feet high and 5 feet wide. The house in almost only one room. We dance to the radio & popped corn & ate it till 12

, and then the Jenkins brought me home. I was astonished at having a fuss made over me (by the girls - not the men) for the excellence of my dancing! Aren't you sorry you're not here to keep an eye on me? However, I wish quantly [sic] repulsed a suggestion that I stay over next Satur- [new line] day to go to a party - it would take a bigger attraction than I can imagine to keep me from starting to you Friday evening. This morning I prepared &
[Page 4]
delivered my lecture. Kramers wasn't present. I told him what I said at lunch. Then I watched him & Olson play cribbage, and then he played two games with me. It is fun - I'm going to teach you. Kramers & Fran will be in Pasadena the end of this month. Unless you don't want to, I'd like to ask them to dinner some evening.
Your story of Sterling's package is amusing. Perhaps Mary Jane S. called before we got back from Europe. I love you, darling.

Dearest darling:
Your letter just arrived, and I'll write you, although I hadn't intended to until later. I've been writing out my lecture for tomorrow, since tonight I'll be at the Wolfe's party. Last night I got a book at the library - a volume of the "Zeitschrift für Angewaudte Psychologie" or something like that, and read about the evil results of suppressing your sex life! Today I met Anin on the campus. She has a new pair of glasses. I told her Peter was arrived. She seemed terribly embarrassed, for she always acts funny. I surely do miss you. I'm not getting a thing done - I just walk around and try to work, but can't - I think of you all the time. I haven't even got my letter written inviting lecturers for the June meeting. Most of the time I try to find something to read. I haven't got up ambition to finish the paper with Jack, which I brought along. If you want some work done, you'd better
[Page 2]
come along with me after this. Yesterday a letter came from Doc Rowland - a rambling apologia. What would you think of getting a note from that girl at Illinois & giving it to Doc in place of that $40? Then we'd be freed of that obliga- [new line] tion. I'd like to hear the baby laugh. I'd like to have gone to the playhouse with you. Tomorrow I'll go to Stanford. Thursday I'll come back. Friday night I'll start for you. Would you ask James to meet me at Glendale at 8
15
AM (or 8
20
or thereabouts) Saturday? I'll say "Home, James". ... I just say there's no girl other than you who intrigues my fantasy - but you do, sweetheart. I adore you, little darling wife.
Now I must go to a seminar in chemistry. I hope its fun - but it won't be. The only time I'm happy here without you is when I'm talking! Love to Linus and Jeff.

Dearest lovely sweet heart;
Your nice little note came today. How are you? This morning I was miserable and worried. Linus had coughed all night and Jeff was sniffly. I too had a miserably sore throat, so I had Dr. McMillan come. He restored me to a more normal state. I do like him. He said Jeff would recover and gave me some cough medicine for Linus. I'll take it, too, to ease my throat.
I went to Dr. Whipple this afternoon. He polished and cleaned until I feel [sic] very new and shiny, but very sore.
I'm so happy to think that there are only three more miserable nights. I'll come with White if every thing is all right here.
Perhaps I'll write another note tomorrow.
About Linus I've decided after thinking very long about him, to try for one month not to punish him. I mean spank him. I believe he has grown immune to that sort of punishment and is definitely antagonistic. He likes now to see me get excited. It will take time and patience, but I know spanking isn't doing one bit of good. Mamma complicates things greatly but maybe she'll go home after while.
I didn't get much sleep last night so I'm going to bed tonight.
You are a dear boy and I love you more than anything.
I opened Uncle Jim's letter. It is a shame that babies used to cause parents such misery. We've lost scarcely any sleep, have we? I thought Uncle Jim was writing about the money which is why I let my curiosity get the better of me.
You be sure and telegraph if you do decide to stay away longer. I'm afraid of the party in the offing.
Goodnight, sweet boy,
Your girl,
Ava Helen

Dearest girl:
You are a darling to send me such a nice surprise. Last night at 6 when I came back from the Chem. Seminar I found it, along with a nice letter from you. Late last night I ate one cross-row of candy, and I ex- [new line] pect a good bit of it will disappear before I start back to see you. I love you, darling.
I'm glad you had a good talk with Mary Jane.
Your are trying to get me excited by telling of your feeling of a completely separate existence. When I get back you'll see how separate you are. I think of you all the time, little sweetheart.
I had dinner with Lewis & the Kramers at the ^Faculty [inserted] Women's Club, and then we drove down to the Oakland Auditorium
[Page 2]
to hear Claire Dux, who sang 22 songs. She is a squashy looking rather plump big blond, who didn't attract me at all. I couldn't understand the words of her songs and didn't care much for them. When we got home there was a Faculty Men's Operetta going on in the Club, and Lewis & I caught the end of it. It was rather amusing. My lecture this morning on the structure of simple molecules excited considerable interest. This afternoon I am to visit several men to talk about their work. Tonight I'll go to the Brode's for dinner. The week will soon be over, and I'm glad.

Dearest Linus,
Pooh! As if I cared whether you get excited or not. Dr. McMillan told me yesterday that I'd hunt a long time to find another husband as admirable as you are - I said I wasn't looking. Of course, you might like me better!
You are so sweet. You know I told you that feeling — not at all one to make you excited. You think you're smart! I looked at myself today, and decided that Jeff and Linus might be more excited over me if they were maturer men. I'm quite a girl in that hat! Anyway they are worth all the men the world — you included.
I hope your last hours there are pleasant. You are such a darling. I've a good notion to leave Saturday afternoon for Chicago to visit Phoebe. That would fox you. What do you do say to get me excited?
I must rush to Jeff now. I just love you dreadfully but you don't need try to get foxy with me. Ummm!
Aufwiedersehen,
Ava Helen.
P.S. You're an old slow poke and a sleepy head in addition.
Love and kisses,
Ava Helen
P.S.S. I do hope you've learned some new tricks - You haven't though. I'll have to spend a month in Berkeley to bring fresh adventure into the family. I nearly wrote fresh blood.

Dearest lovely sweetheart:
I had such a fine surprise yesterday evening! Such beautiful pictures of you and Peter with Linus in the background came, with no warning whatever. I like them terribly, and have showed them to everyone. Kramers said Peter looked dumb as all babies, except in a few pictures, and that babies shouldn't be photographed before 4 months. Bernice Brode said her baby must have something wrong with him, since he's so ugly - and he is, having very little eyes and poorly assorted features, including a Roman nose. Lewis said he wanted us to come again next spring,
[Page 2]
and that year after next he would get us a large salary, from the Chem. Dept. alone. Next year he wants Badger to come too, to teach colloid chem.& help with the freshman. Last night's dinner at the Brode's was all right. Another nice letter from you came this morning. Just think, tomorrow I start to you - isn't that fine? I'm sorry to hear about Lena. Now I must go to get my Pullman. I'll see you Saturday morning!
