OSU Libraries Online Catalog

All formats of library materials owned by OSU libraries. Access at: oasis.oregonstate.edu

Summit (the Orbis Cascade Alliance union catalog)

Combined catalog of most Oregon and Washington academic institutions, with many items available for OSU community patrons to request. Search http://summit.orbiscascade.org/or click "Repeat in Summit" button in the OSU Catalog.

Searching by Subject Heading

Online catalogs can be searched in a variety of ways (author, title, subject, etc.) But the most effective subject searching utilizes the Library of Congress Subject Headings.

Here are a few examples of subject headings for LGBT and gender studies:

Sex   Sex role   Gender identity
Homosexuality   Lesbianism   Bisexuality
Homosexuality and art   Gay and lesbian studies   Gay men -- United States -- Biography
Gay men in literature   Homosexuality --Law and legislation   Children of gay parents

Find a longer list at http://library.auraria.edu/libq/glbt_lcsh.html

Locating by call number

Browsing by call number can sometimes yield good results. Many LGBT and Gender Study materials fall under HQ 9-471 Sexual Life. This call number is located on the 5th floor of the Valley Library. But don't limit yourself to the HQs; there are materials in Art, Music, Law, Medicine--LGBT covers the entire spectrum of human experience.

Finding Articles in Journals

Journal indexes (Databases)

To find individual articles in journals, use journal indexes which are usually online electronic databases. Most indexes allow you to search by author or title of the article as well as subject or topic. Most online indexes also allow you to search the article citation and abstract with a keyword.

Locating journals

Search OSU Libraries Online Catalog for the Journal Title to determine (1) if OSU owns the journal, and (2) if it is available electronically (online) or in the library stacks. Journals are arranged by call number.
If a journal is unavailable at OSU, copies of journal articles can be requested via Interlibrary Loan: http://osulibrary.oregonstate.edu/ill/

Electronic journals

  • Electronic journals can be searched in several ways:
    E-Journal list
can be searched by subject or by journal title keyword, in addition to browsing by individual journal title.
Catalog records for individual journals contain links to the title online if available electronically.

In addition, several of our databases offer full-text for some articles. Links to these are included in both the catalog and the e-journal list.

Remote access

You can use OSU Library databases from off-campus. More information at: http://osulibrary.oregonstate.edu/offcampus/remote.htm
