Introduction
Listed below are a variety of
resources used to find information on wildlife and fisheries. Before you
start a research project consider the following questions: Do you need
a comprehensive literature search or a sampling?; Do you need research
results or general information on the topic?; Is the project due tomorrow
or next year? Just as each of your projects is unique, so are the sources
you will use to find information. Remember to ask a librarian for help
in getting started or bailing you out. Contact Janet Webster, the subject
librarian for fisheries and wildlife, at 7-0108 or Janet.Webster@oregonstate.edu.

Finding Books
Much of the fisheries and wildlife
material in the Valley Library is shelved in the "SH" and "SK"
call number areas, but since the information you will use is multidisciplinary,
you will also look in other areas including, HD (economics), QH (biology
& ecology), and QL (zoology). The Guin Library at the Hatfield Marine
Science Center in Newport has a large collection on marine fisheries and
coastal wildlife.
Search OSU
Libraries' Online Catalog for books, journal titles, conference proceedings,
government documents and reports. You can search by author, title or subject
either by browsing or using keywords. If you choose to browse by subject
try subject headings such as these:

Finding Articles
To find articles in journals,
magazines, newspapers, etc., use a database that covers your topic.
Get started with these general
databases.
- Academic
Search Premier
- Provides full text for over 4600 academic, social sciences, humanities,
general science, education and multi-cultural journals. This includes
3500 peer reviewed journal. This database is updated daily. Coverage
varies with each journal, but some go back as far as 1975.
- AGRICOLA
-- (1970-present).
Data provided by the National Agriculture Library comprises the most
comprehensive coverage of agricultural literature. This index is particularly
good for information on aquaculture, including many government reports.
- Web
of Science -- (1955-present, online since 1996).
Indexes approximately 5,000 journals from various scientific disciplines.
Represents core life science journals defined as those most often cited
in research articles. Searchable by author, article title work, journal
name, cited author, and cited journal name.
Use these for more comprehensive
searches as well as more topic specific ones.
- Aquatic
Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts-- (1972-present).
This index provides abstracts of the international literature dealing
with the science, technology, and management of marine, freshwater,
and brackish environments.
- Fish
and Fisheries Worldwide -- (1971-Present).
Coverage includes studies of individual species, diseases and parasites,
economics, genetics, habitats, management practices and techniques,
natural history and general research.
- Biological
Abstracts -- (1927-present, online since 1991).
Worldwide research in biology, medicine and interdisciplinary life science
is indexed by author, biosystems (taxonomic categories), genus-species
names and subject.
- Dissertation
Abstracts International -- (1861-present).
This provides author and keyword title access to this wealth of information.
Titles are arranged by subject: wildlife is in Section B: Science and
Engineering.
- Environmental
Science & Pollution Management -- (1992-present).
Comprehensive, multidisciplinary index to articles from all fields in
the environmental sciences. Indexes U.S. government environmental impact
statements.
- Wildlife
and Ecology Studies Worldwide -- (1935-present).
This selectively indexes over 1,300 journals and over 500 non-journal
sources. It is useful for world-wide coverage of current literature
on wildlife and natural resources.
- Zoological
Record -- Library web (1864-Present, online since 1993).
This is the most comprehensive and oldest continuing taxonomic reference
source in zoology. There are 20 sections, each dealing with a single
group of animals phylogenetically, and has author, subject and systematic
indices.

Electronic Journals
If you can browse fisheries
and wildlife electronic journals using these links to lists of journals
by subject. Time coverage varies and currently more is in paper than electronically.
For a more comprehensive search on a narrower topic, be sure to use the
Indexes and Abstracts first.
The OSU Libraries are moving
towards more electronic access to journals rathr than print. Here's the
complete list
of the electronic journals to which we subscribe.

Useful References Sources
Use reference resources to locate
standard information on species, habitats, organizations and policy. They
are often excellent starting points for a research project. These are
just examples of the variey of resources available. Some are only available
in print.
- Birds
of North America
