Final Instructions
Your browser is now configured for the proxy server; use the OSU Libraries web pages to navigate to the resources you wish to access. When you attempt to access restricted databases or online journals you will be prompted as follows:
If you are unable to connect to library databases after following these instructions, please read the Troubleshooting section below, or contact OSU Computer Consulting at (541) 737-3474.
Troubleshooting
Can't Connect with Internet Explorer
Several older versions of Internet Explorer will not work at all with the proxy server. You can get a current version from the ORSTware CD (available to students, staff, and faculty of OSU) or download it.
If it is not feasible to upgrade your version of Internet Explorer, you can try patching Internet Explorer version 5 or 5.5.
Netscape 6 / Setup for proxy server, but no web pages will load
This was a problem with Netscape 6.01 and 6.0. You can either upgrade to 6.1 or newer, or select Direct Connection in the proxy setup.
Problems with AT&T Cable Modem
AT&T cable modem users may be able to use the proxy server once, but AT&T @Home software rewrites the proxy settings each time the browser is launched. You therefore need to reconfigure the @Home browser each time it is launched. You can get around this by installing a second browser and configuring it for the library proxy server. Copies of Netscape and Internet Explorer are available on the ORSTWare CD, or can be downloaded from the Web.
General Information:
- Many workplaces run networks that are protected by firewalls. Proxy server access is not possible from these workplaces.
- Some Internet Service Providers run their own proxy servers and therefore prevent use of other proxy servers by their customers. If you have not yet acquired internet access, be sure to check with your provider before signing on. You may want to connect through the private ISP with whom OSU has contracted (AT&T Global Networks - Look for AT&T Global Network Dialer on the ORSTWare CD).
- If you are connecting through AOL, you must download a separate browser and configure it to use the proxy server. Launch this browser after you've established your connection with AOL.
- Internet Explorer seems to be more problematic than Netscape (4.x or earlier) for browser configuration. If you have problems connecting with Internet Explorer, try installing Netscape instead. A free copy is available on the OSUWare CD.
