Finalized Journal Cancellations for 2000

The list of cancelled journal titles has been finalized. The list can be viewed at Journal cancellations effective 1-2001. Notification of cancellation will go to our vendors by September 30, to terminate our subscription at the end of 2000.

The reason for cancellation of subscription is budgetary. Costs for periodical subscriptions are increasing at a higher rate than our collections budget. A proposed list was posted for faculty comment during spring term. The list was modified based upon faculty commentary. Overall, titles were chosen for cancellation based upon a number of factors including high cost, relatively low use by faculty and availability elsewhere in Oregon.

Questions can be directed to Bonnie Allen, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Technical Services at .

Chemical Abstracts via SciFinder

OSU now has access to the SciFinder Scholar service. SciFinder Scholar provides electronic searching of Chemical Abstracts (CA) and the CAS Registry file. CA is the world's largest and most up-to-date collection of chemical information, with nearly 16 million abstracts of journal articles, patents, and more. CAS Registry contains more than 24,000,000 substance records, including more than 16,000,000 organic and inorganic substances and 4,000,000 biosequences. The Registry is the world's largest collection of organic substance records.

Access to SciFinder and Chemical Abstracts is restricted to on-campus users, including the OSU modem pool.

If you are not in the Valley Library, you must download SciFinder Scholar before accessing the database.

Additional information about accessing SciFinder can be found at this link.

TableBase Database Subscription

OSU Libraries now has a subscription to TableBase. TableBase is a database comprised of tabular information of a strategic nature. Every record has a unique table title written by RDS staff which aids users in making precise selection of tables that meet their searching needs. Many of the table records also have textual content which supports the data in the tables. The tables provide information such as: market share, market size, capacity, production, imports, exports, sales, product and brand rankings, forecasts, healthcare statistics and demographics. Tables are drawn from the more than 1000 sources that go into the Business & Industry database and from statistical annuals, brokerage reports, trade association reports, and governmental reports. Tables are easy to find in TableBase because the table data is the focus of the record - we index the contents of the table - not the contents of the text that may accompany the table. This results in extremely accurate results when searching for tabular information related to companies, industries, products, markets and demographics.

To access TableBase, go to http://0-search.rdsinc.com.oasis.orst.edu/login and click on the log in button. No login or password is needed if you are on campus, coming in through the OSU modem pool, or have set up your web browser as a proxy server (see /offcampus/remote.htm for instructions on remote access to library databases).

Web of Science Trial May 11-May 30

The OSU Libraries has arranged for a trial of the ISI Web of Science database. This trial is scheduled to run through May 30, 2000.

The URL to access the Web of Science trial sever is http://wos.isitrial.com. Access is IP-based and is available to all computers on campus and off-campus for OSU faculty and students who use the OSU modem pool or have set up their browser to use the library's proxy server.

The trial covers all three citation databases - Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index for the years: 1975-1999 data, plus all 2000 year-to-date weekly updates.

With the Easy Search option under the home page for Web of Science, you can search by topic (keywords from the title or abstract), person (all authors of an article are searchable), and place (the institutions the authors are affiliated with).

Under the Full Search option, it is possible to search by keywords, author name, journal title, author affiliation, or cited reference.

Please Note:

Trial access is limited to three simultaneous users. Any subsequent attempts to access the database after three users are logged on will receive a message that the maximum limit of concurrent users is already in effect. For this reason, we strongly recommend that all participants use the LOGOFF button at the end of each search session when they finish reviewing the product. This immediately frees the session for the next user. (The LOGOFF button is also found on the Web of Science Homepage.)

Product Feedback:

ISI encourages all participants to use the automated survey, which can be accessed after pressing the LOGOFF button. Once the LOGOFF button is pressed, you will see a hotlink in the text (feedback). Accessing this hotlink will take you to a survey page on ISI's Homepage. Comments can also be sent to Laurel Kristick at laurel.kristick@orst.edu.

Oxford English Dictionary Web-Version Trial

The OSU Libraries have set up a trial of the web-version of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). This trial is scheduled to run through May 31, 2000.

Access information:

Information about OED Online:
The Oxford English Dictionary, the world's leading authority on the history and development of the English language since 1150, is now available online to subscribers.

In addition to offering unparalleled access to the wealth of material contained in the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary and 3-volume Additions Series, online publication enables the 'treasure-house' of the English language to move with the times as never before.

For the first time since it was completed in 1928, the Oxford English Dictionary is being completely revised; every word and every sense is being fully reviewed, and new words added, to take account of the latest changes in language and scholarship. New material from the £34 million (US $55 million) revision programme, which began in 1993, will be released quarterly, offering online subscribers a unique opportunity to follow the progress of the revision project.

Features and benefits of OED Online:

  • See at least 1,000 new and revised entries each quarter
  • Search the equivalent of over 20 volumes of information with speed and ease
  • Display entries according to your needs - for the first time you can turn pronunciation, etymologies, variant spellings, and quotations on and off
  • Compare revised entries with entries from the Second Edition to see how the language has changed.

The estimated annual cost of this database for OSU is $3,500 (this is based a consortial price of .23 per student FTE).
