  4. Align the barcode horizontally beneath the scanner's red line until you hear a "beep".
  5. Repeat this step for each item you wish to check out.

Request Items from Valley Library or Cascades Library

When books and journals are not available locally, check the library CATALOG to see if the title you want is owned by OSU's Valley or Cascades Library. If so, articles, books or other items can be requested

by simply clicking on the REQUEST button located on the upper left corner of the catalog record for the title you want.

Request this item Example: A button like this one can be found on each record in the library catalog. When you locate the record for the specific item you want to get from the Valley or Cascades Library, request it by using that button.

Then fill in the following information:

  1. Type your name and patron I.D. number
  2. Type all citation information if you are placing an article request.
  3. Click the correct "pick-up" location if you want an item delivered to your site.
  4. Click "Submit" at the bottom of the request.
  5. If multiple OSU libraries own the title, you now need to click on the location from which you want to order it.
  6. Click "Submit" again after you have chosen a location.

Request from Orbis Summit Alliance

OSU faculty, staff and students can request books and other items from the Orbis Cascade Alliance Union Catalog which provides access to more than 25 million items belonging to the collections of thirty or more colleges and universities in the Northwest. Use this catalog to locate items which are NOT owned by any of the OSU Libraries, or for OSU items which are currently unavailable.

  1. Confirm that the item is not available from any OSU Library.
  2. Search the Summit catalog for the item you need.
  3. Once you find the record for what you want, click on "Summit Libraries have this item". The "status" column shows you whether the item is available or not.
  4. If item is available, click "Request This Item".
  5. Click on the name of your institution; then click on "Submit Above Information".
  6. Type your name and OSU ID number.
  7. Click on your correct "Pick-Up Institution" from the menu provided.
  8. Now click on your correct "Pick-Up Location".
  9. Click on the "Submit" button and you'll receive a message identifying the status of your request.

Register for Interlibrary Loan Service

This service helps you access materials that OSU does not own. Items can be borrowed from other institutions in the U.S. as well as from international lenders. However, everyone who wishes to use the ILL service must first register to use it.

A. OSU faculty, staff and students (including courtesy faculty & CIMRS) must have an ONID account before registering for ILL service. For help, phone OSU Computer Helpdesk at (541) 737-3474 or email them at osuhelpdesk@oregonstate.edu

Please ask the Guin Library staff for help with this if you are having any trouble; the process can be a bit frustrating

Once you have your ONID account and know your Onid username and password, you are ready to register for Interlibrary Loan service. Simply fill out and submit the electronic form

B. Non-OSU people associated with HMSC do not need to have an ONID account to register for ILL service. They may simply register by filling out this FORM and submitting it.

Everyone who registers for Interlibrary Loan service will receive an email message confirming successful registration. Please be sure to write down your new ILL username and password; you'll need to use them each time you place a request.

Request Items via Interlibrary Loan Service

Once you have received confirmation that you are registered for this service, you can begin requesting materials. When you want to get an item that is not owned by any of the OSU Libraries, request it through Interlibrary Loan Service. Everyone who is registered for Interlibrary Loan service may logon and place ILL requests.

  1. Type in your ONID user name and password.
  2. Click on the Login button.
  3. Select the type of material you are requesting.
  4. Fill out the form as completely as you can. Note required fields
  5. Click on the Submit button.
