Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of memorabilia, publications, and photographs that probably belonged to Alice Jones. The photographs include about 36 hand-painted prints (most in a small album). Notable subjects include views of the Willamette River in Corvallis and Portland; Oregon woods; Vancouver Lake; Mount Rainier; the beach; canoeing on the Yaquina River; a creek near Estacada; sailboats; a mill wheel; and several identified individuals including Alice Jones, Bess Yates, Marian Jones, Mary Jones, Will Jones, and the Flett boys.
The publications include the June 1904 College Barometer with a story by Alice Jones and the June 1905 Souvenir Number of the College Barometer, for which Jones was the Associate Editor. The collection also includes a printed photograph of the 1904 OAC football team annotated with the players' names.
Biographical Note
Alumna Alice Elizabeth Jones graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1905 with a degree in Household Science. She was from Corvallis, Oregon and attended OAC for four academic years (1901/02 - 1904/05). She was a member of the Feronian Literary Society, Associate Editor of the June 1905 souvenir edition of the College Barometer, and salutatorian of the Class of 1905.
She taught in Oregon and California; graduated from Columbia University in 1921 with a degree in home economics; and worked for the YWCA in Hawaii and Richmond, Virginia. In the late 1920s, she married Lloyd Brant Thomas. They lived in California during the 1930s and 1940s and by 1955 had moved to Portland, Oregon.
Provenance
These materials were mailed to the Archives from Hermiston, Oregon by Doris Pitzer in late 1994. They were in a box that she bought at an auction.
